Industry leaders at Nigeria Fintech Week 2026 identified artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, workforce skills and customer trust as priorities for the next phase of Nigeria’s financial technology sector. The event, held on 22–23 September across Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, explored how fintech could expand beyond digital payments into broader financial services and economic infrastructure.
Stanley Jacobs, president of the Fintech Association of Nigeria, said the industry needed to strengthen institutional trust and security while developing the skills required to adopt next-generation AI. Speakers also stressed that customers must understand how their financial information is used and have confidence that their money and transactions are protected.
The shift has implications for fintech founders, software developers and cybersecurity professionals. As financial services rely more heavily on data and automated systems, companies must consider fraud prevention, data protection and responsible AI use alongside product development.
For South-East technology businesses and aspiring developers, the discussion highlights relevant areas for product design and skills development. However, the conference statements do not establish which specific skills local employers are currently hiring for or identify new opportunities available in the region.
The industry’s challenge is to use emerging technology to improve financial services without weakening the security and confidence customers need to use them.
